Casa Martí and Els 4 Gats
Barcelona has a unique place where you will feel the modernist epoch and the bohemian spirit of Barcelona. The story began in Paris in the late 19th century, when a young Pere Romeu worked as an entertainer and waiter at the cabaret "Le Chat Noir". Inspired by the atmosphere, he decided to create a similar restaurant in Barcelona. The cafe-restaurant "Els 4 Gats" occupied the ground floor of Casa Martí built in 1895 by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch with its promoters Pere Romeu, Miguel Utrillo, Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol, who were "Els 4 Gats" (The 4 Cats). Casa Martí is located in an alley of the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, on Montsió Street, breathing the air of a medieval castle. The tavern-cabaret was opened to the public on June 12, 1897. The façade, inspired by the European Gothic style, is dressed with ornamental elements typical of Catalan modernism. "Els 4 Gats" invites us to its cozy interior that was the center of modernist Barcelona, by the end of the 19th century. On the ground floor, a poster designed by Pablo Picasso welcomes us to the restaurant, heir to the first tavern that was reopened after having been closed for decades. During its 6 years of work, intellectuals and new bohemia of Barcelona met there for talks, shows and concerts.
In 1899, aged 17, Picasso began to visit "Els 4 Gats" and made his first exhibition in the big room. Musicians such as Isaac Albéniz and his friends Enric Granados and Lluís Millet, architects such as Gaudí and artists such as Ricard Opisso also passed through the tavern. In June 1903 Pere Romeu closed the tavern, the closing ceremony surprised all the people of Barcelona. Later "Els 4 Gats" became the headquarters of the house of the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc, until 1936. At the end of the 1970s, 3 hotel businessmen decided to reopen "Els 4 Gats" , focusing on the cultural environment of Barcelona at the beginning of the 20th century, then in 1991 Casa Martí was also restored.
